West Ashley, South Carolina, is one of six distinct areas that make up the city of Charleston. West Ashley is
located north of James Island and West of the Charleston peninsula. Rich in history, growing fast, and convenient

West Ashley, is named thus because it is west of the Ashley River. During the American Revolution and the Civil
War, skirmishes took place in the area and several batteries were located there. Since West Ashley, South Carolina
is where colonists established the first permanent settlement in the Carolinas in 1670, it is known as the
birthplace of Charleston. The settlers historic landing site, Charles Town Landing, has been preserved and turned
into a state historic site featuring a reproduction of a seventeenth century sailing vessel along with a zoo and
botanic gardens. This park and historic site offers opportunities to learn about our great state’s history and is a
favorite for residents of West Ashley.
Development of neighborhoods began in the 1950s, with growth booming through the 70s and 80s. As new roads and
interstates were built in the 1980s, West Ashley became more connected to the Charleston metro area, and the area
saw explosive growth during the 1990s. West Ashley, South Carolina was prime real estate for major retailer chains
and businesses, since the land needed for these establishments was not available in downtown Charleston. West
Ashley is home to the area’s largest shopping mall, newest hospital, and the area’s CBS affiliate WCSC-TV.
West Ashley, South Carolina is served by the schools of Charleston County School District, some of the best in
the state. A high school, three middle schools, and five elementary schools service the area. The town is also home
to a number of private schools, including K-12 college preparatory school Porter-Gaud School, founded in 1867. West
Ashley is mostly located within Charleston city limits, and the few pockets of unincorporated Charleston County are
served by the Saint Andrews Public Service District.
Residents of West Ashley enjoy easy access to downtown Charleston and the many attractions, cultural events,
fine dining, and shopping available there. They also enjoy easy access to the miles of beautiful beaches along the
South Carolina coast. Numerous major roadways and several bridges make it easy to reach downtown Charleston and the
rest of the Metro area. West Ashley, South Carolina is a place of natural beauty, rich in history and Southern
