North Charleston is located just a few minutes north of downtown Charleston, in Charleston and Dorchester
Counties. The third most populous city in South Carolina, North Charleston is one of the state’s major
military and industrial cities and is home to the Charleston Naval Complex. Known as the “hub of the
lowcountry”, this city is an ideal place for families at all stages of life. North Charleston, South Carolina
has all the modern conveniences and comforts you depend on and is close to downtown Charleston and major Charleston
attractions.
During the 1600s, and for most of its history, this region was mostly made up of plantations which were
subdivided into smaller plots as the population moved north. In 1912 a group of businessmen from Charleston
purchased a tract of land in North Charleston and began development on an industrial city. Areas were planned
for industrial, commercial, and residential use around Park Circle. Significant growth around nearby military
bases began during World War II, and today North Charleston is a major military center. In 1972, North
Charleston officially became a city.
The Naval Base in North Charleston was the largest employer in South Carolina well into the 1990s. When
the base closed in 1996, it was a great economic loss to the tri-county area. Since then, parts of the Base
have been leased out to private businesses and various government programs, and several community parks can be
found on the former Naval Base grounds. US Military and various defense companies, however, continue to
expand in the area. The US Navy Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command is one of the largest employers in
the Charleston metro area, and in 2009, Boeing moved some aircraft manufacturing operations to North Charleston,
South Carolina.
North Charleston is the South Carolina leader in retail sales, as it has been for over 15 years. The
economy in North Charleston is booming, thanks to a huge variety of hotels and other accommodations to meet the
tourism industry’s needs. North Charleston is home to the North Charleston Coliseum, a 13,500-seat venue that
hosts a variety of events as well as the South Carolina Stingrays, a minor league hockey team. The Charleston
Area Convention Center Complex, Performing Arts Center, and a wide variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment
options are also in North Charleston, South Carolina.
North Charleston prides itself high-quality education. Thirty public elementary, middle, and high schools
are in the region, including several top-rated magnet schools. Garrett Academy of Technology, a cutting edge
technical school, Charleston County School of the Arts, a middle and high school emphasizing the visual and
performing arts, Military Magnet Academy, and the Academic Magnet High School are all in North Charleston.
Additionally there are two institutions of higher learning in the city, Charleston Southern University and Trident
Technical College.
