businesses to serve the community. On September 24, 1860, Mount Pleasant produced the first secession
resolution of South Carolina. During the civil war, Battery Gary and other floating batteries were crucial in
the defense of Mount Pleasant, along with a line of fortifications running from Copahee Sound to Boone Hall to
Elliot’s Creek. The crew of the confederate submarine H.L. Hunley trained in Mount Pleasant, and it was from
Mount Pleasant that the submarine originally launched in 1864. Thus began Mount Pleasant’s rich maritime
tradition.
A testament to that tradition is Patriot’s Point, a naval and maritime museum. There, visitors can tour
the USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier commissioned during World War II. Situated in Mount Pleasant, South
Carolina across the harbor from downtown Charleston, Patriot’s Point is just one of the places where families can
learn about South Carolina’s history and enjoy a day together. Mount Pleasant is also home to many historic
plantations. The best known of these is Boone Hall Plantation, the most photographed plantation in the
country. In addition to being one of the most beautiful sites in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Boone Hall
is also one of the country’s oldest working plantations, producing regular crops for over 350 years. Boone
Hall produces a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, maintains a market, and has U-Pick fields open in season for
families to come pick their own fruits and vegetables.

beaches. Miles of pristine white sand and clear blue water are accessible only a short drive from Mount
