Isle of Palms, South Carolina, is a city located on a barrier island along South Carolina’s coast. Just a short drive from downtown Charleston, Isle of Palms is southeast of Mount Pleasant and separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway and natural saltwater marshland. One of Charleston’s most popular beach destinations, Isle of Palms has both residential, retail, and commercial enclaves. The palm lined streets feature row after row of idyllic beach homes, and the atmosphere in this small city is relaxed. Isle of Palms, South Carolina was originally known as Hunting, then later as Long Island. The island was first inhabited by the Sewee Indians, who were said to have greeted English settlers by swimming out their boats and escorting them to shore. Legend also holds that pirates once inhabited Isle of Palms, burying their treasures among the dunes, though no treasure has yet been found.

During the American Revolution, a British army of 2,500 men attempted an attack on a colonial camp on nearby Sullivan’s Island, but drowned while trying to cross the dangerous waters the Breach Inlet, the gap between the two islands. During the Civil War the Hunley, the first submarine in history to sink an enemy vessel, launched from Breach Inlet. During the late 1800s, Isle of Palms was finally recognized by locals as a wonderful summer retreat spot, and was purchased in 1899 by J.S. Lawrence, who gave it the familiar name we now know. Developments began to pop up on Isle of Palms including a beach pavilion and an amusement park. It wasn’t until 1929, when the Grace Memorial Bridge was constructed connecting Isle of Palms to the mainland, that visitors could reach the island by car. In 1946, J.C. Long purchased much of the island and began building low-cost housing to World War II veterans, and Isle of Palms began to develop into a thriving residential community.

During the 1970s, the Sea Pines Company, of Hilton Head Island, created a resort at the northeast part of Isle of Palms now known as The Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club. Since that time, Isle of Palms, South Carolina has developed a reputation as an upscale, charming, and naturally beautiful getaway with plenty of Charleston charm where residents and visitors alike can enjoy a peaceful beach lifestyle. Isle of Palms is one of the most desirable communities in the greater Charleston area, and it’s easy to see why.
